Skitouring in Iceland, Trollaskagi

Winter white fjord landscapes paired with the deep blue of the Arctic Ocean – the contrast is stunning and could not be more extreme than here on the Troll Peninsula up in the north of Iceland, close to the Arctic Circle.

Three fjords, connected by tunnels and thus easily accessible, characterize the landscape of the Troll Peninsula. The fjords of the little villages Oafsfjördur and Siglufjördur, as well as the unpopulated Hedinsfjord, offer many opportunities for a ski touring week. Add to that the mountains surrounding the nearby coastal town of Dalvik, which, besides a small ski area, also hosts one of the island’s best cafes. So all in all, the ideal destination for a great ski touring week in the high North!

  1. Travel to Olafsfjordur Day 1

Arrival at Keflavík, Reykjavík’s international airport, is arranged individually.

After loading our luggage into the van, we’ll head off without delay. A drive of just under 5 hours lies ahead. Following the famous Ring Road, we pass the capital Reykjavík and continue through fascinating volcanic landscapes to the island’s north. We’ll reach our destination late in the evening and check into our chalets in Ólafsfjörður.

  2. Skitouring Day 2

After the long journey, we’ll take it easy in the morning. We’ll meet for breakfast and take our time until everyone is ready for the adventure ahead. The days are already long up here in the north— it doesn’t get dark before 23:00—so there’s no rush.

Afterwards we set off in search of our first ski-touring adventure on the Troll Peninsula. Our goal is always to find the best conditions!

  3. Skitouring Day 3- 6

We choose each day’s tour based on the best snow conditions. If conditions are good, we may even head out a second time in the afternoon—after all, good conditions are there to be made the most of! In between there’s always time for a relaxed break over coffee and cake, a beer, or an Icelandic fish soup. If you prefer to take it easy, you’re welcome to unwind in the hot pot in the afternoon.

If the weather is poor, we aim for the best possible tour within the given conditions—taking extra care, of course.

Beyond ski touring, there are plenty of other options: a visit to the hot springs at Mývatn, a side trip to the small city of Akureyri, or a visit to the impressive fishing museum in Siglufjörður.

On the afternoon of day 6, we drive back to Reykjavík.

We check into our hotel right in the city center and, after dinner, can explore the downtown bars and cafés.

  4. Sightseeing Day 7

After a leisurely breakfast at Sandholt bakery, we set out to explore the main sights of the “Golden Circle” around the capital, Reykjavík. Along with Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park, we’ll see the mighty Gullfoss waterfall and the active Strokkur geyser. In the late afternoon we return to Reykjavík and can do a bit more city sightseeing before meeting for dinner.

  5. Return Flight Day 8

Early in the morning we head to Keflavík Airport to catch our return flight.
